With over 20 years supporting innovation and sustainability in Canada and beyond, Bioenterprise Canada is proud to reflect on the promising future of Food & Agri-Tech sector during this year’s Earth Week awareness campaign
This year’s Earth Day theme of #investinourplanet, highlights our responsibility to reshape the climate conversation as we grapple with the need for more food with fewer emissions. Agtech, innovation, policy and investment will be at the forefront of this green revolution.
Canada’s food supply chain from farm to fork will be affected as we move to a net-zero transition in food and agriculture. Next-generation agri-tech, innovation, and investment will be at the forefront as Canada looks to feed a growing population.
Bioenterprise is committed to advancing sustainable agriculture and net-zero production in the agri-food and agri-tech sectors. Our programming strategically invests in enterprise environmental stewardship.
The FoodShift program is a green initiative supported by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, designed to encourage the adoption of clean technology into food and beverage processors’ organizations. Ontario’s food and beverage processing industry is one of North America’s largest manufacturing sectors, making it a relatively large emitter of greenhouse gases. Delivering the FoodShift program shows how strategic investment can propel a transition toward a net-zero future. Click here to learn more about the FoodShift program.
Our sustainability sponsors are large organizations that see Canadian innovation as cutting-edge and full of ample opportunities. Sustainable development will require organizations of all sizes to continue to move the needle.
“Bioenterprise Canada is a national accelerator supporting Canada’s most innovative and sustainable companies in the agri-food tech industry from pre-seed to SME. These innovators significantly impact our everyday lives and future selves by providing solutions that can create more sustainable food systems. Our sustainability sponsors are large organizations that see Canadian innovation as cutting edge and full of ample opportunities. Sustainable development will require organizations of all sizes to continue to move the needle on ensuring GHGs are limited in our industry. The opportunities for sustainable innovation in agriculture are limitless. From reducing our carbon impact through carbon capture measurements in primary agriculture to diversified waste streams being repurposed for energy or fertilizer applications. These novel ideas are supported by our Sustainability Sponsors and enable Bioenterprise to engage with government and industry in a positive dialogue that will continue to progress innovation for Canadian agriculture.”

As Canada’s Food & Agri-Tech Engine, Bioenterprise Celebrates Collaboration in Driving Sustainable Innovation
We are pleased to be able to help incubate and facilitate these innovations through our professional network of industry partners, all of which being integral to sustainable development in the sector.
Our partner, the Research Innovation Office at the University of Guelph, is thrilled to be working with FloNergia Inc. to advance sustainable agriculture. Dr. Wael Ahmed, a professor in the School of Engineering within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, has already made waves in the aquaculture industry with his energy-saving water pump, now commercialized by the company FloNergia under the name FloMov™. FloMov™ is saving fish farmers 50 to 70 per cent of the energy used in conventional systems, while reducing operating costs, increasing aeration efficiency and improving water quality. In conjunction with the development of new technologies, Bioenterprise Canada works to accelerate the transition from ideation to commercialization through this same expansive network of industry partners as well as through our professional team of Innovation Advisors who together hold decades of specified industry expertise. Our ultimate aim is to help get these incredible solutions to market as quickly and as efficiently as possible in an effort to bolster both the North American and global markets. In addition, and with our sector-specific expertise, we are also thrilled to be contributing to the fight against global climate and food shortage challenges that will define the prosperity of preceding generations in the decades to come.
Realized change in the industry is rooted in collaboration
The road to commercialization for products and technologies, as well as the implementation of new Food & Agri-Tech systems, facilities, and best practices is only possible through efficient communication channels and distribution of resources. That’s why we’re so pleased to incubate this process by encouraging collaboration throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
Through the FoodShift program, a green matchmaking initiative, we’ve identified clean technology providers that have the potential to transform the food and beverage processing industry in southern Ontario.
Clean technologies bring sustainable innovations to life through automation, energy conservation, water management, sustainable packaging solutions and beyond. These technologies are instrumental in facilitating a shared path to Canada’s sustainable future, and it is through these funding opportunities that widespread adoption is made possible.
Environmental engineering consultant and clean technology provider of the FoodShift program, Enviro-Stewards Inc. is chartering this path of sustainable solutions. “We have found the FoodShift program to be a catalyst for the design and implementation of sustainability measures. Our joint applications with food manufacturers and clean technology providers have been suitably reviewed and accepted based on their projected greenhouse gas emissions savings. The realizations of these projects aim to directly conserve electrical and thermal energy as well as to reduce supply chain impacts by reducing food and beverage losses in manufacturing facilities.” – Andreas Mertes, Enviro-Stewards Inc.
