Bioenterprise Canada and North Bay’s university sign MOU

Guelph/North Bay, 10 January 2023 – Nipissing University has become a Knowledge & Development Partner of Bioenterprise Canada, known as Canada’s Food & Agri-Tech Engine.

“Nipissing University’s resources, skills and expertise will be a valuable asset to Canada’s Food & Agri-Tech Engine and our efforts to encourage and expand agri-food innovation in northern Ontario,” says Bioenterprise Canada CEO Dave Smardon. “A key strategic priority for Bioenterprise is sustainable innovation and Nipissing’s research focus on environment and natural resources with regional impact will complement and enhance our work in this area.”

Nipissing’s research in these fields looks at complex environmental challenges on both a local and a global scale, and integrates Indigenous knowledge systems, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations opens new doors into northern Ontario for the Engine’s national network and offers the Nipissing community, including agri-food and food-tech innovators, access to mentorship, partnership and funding support available through Bioenterprise Canada.

“Partnering with Bioenterprise Canada helps to create new connections where we can contribute to finding sustainable solutions and help support our community partners as well as innovation in the North,” says Barbi Law, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research (Interim) at Nipissing University. “This new partnership will provide access to learning opportunities related to the processes around Intellectual Property, entrepreneurship and commercialization, new collaborative opportunities for our researchers, and experiential learning for our students.”
