John Michaelides, Advisor, Food Sector
John Michaelides holds a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo. He has over 27 years experience in the food industry and two years as a research associate with the “Centre for Process Development” based at the University of Waterloo. He holds two food-processing patents for the production of protein and dietary fiber. He carried out research in new milling and pre-processing technologies for the improvement of wheat quality. He developed a proprietary process for the stabilization of raw wheat germ and bran with an increased shelf life and much higher market value as a food ingredient. He has been involved in the development of numerous functional food products and new processing technologies.
After 20 years in the food industry, he joined the Guelph Food Technology Centre in 2004 as the Director of Technical Services overseeing the product and process development and pilot plant activities. Recently he undertook the role of Director of Research and Technology investigating “Market and technology Intelligence Transfer for the Agri-Food Processing Industry”. In this role at GFTC he sourced a novel food processing technologies and connected them to the Canadian food industry.
Through the GFTC he developed and delivered many food technology courses for the food industry.
Currently he is a private technical consultant for the food industry. In addition he is associated with Conestoga College as part time faculty in the Institute of Food Processing Technology.
During his many years of involvement in the food industry, he served as representative in numerous scientific and technical committees as well as on committees for the revision of the Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Credit food guides.
He has several publications in scientific journals, wrote many articles in food trade magazines and is a regular contributor to Bakers Journal with his Technical Talk column.
